1. Check your oil

This may sound simple, but don't suspect that your car is running fine on oil just because your oil light hasn't come on yet. Technically, by the time your check engine or oil light comes on, your vehicle is already in trouble.

Check your oil often, especially if you plan on going on a long road trip or have been putting excess miles on your car lately. Your oil levels should be at their highest point, and the oil should be a honey color to a rich brown, not black. If your car's oil is thick and black, it may not be lubricating your engine like it should and needs to be replaced.

2. Service your car

Service your car on a routine basis as instructed by your mechanic. Servicing your car allows all fluids to be checked and filled and gets your air filter changed as well. A good-running engine is one that is checked often.

3. Repair your car

If you hear clanging, squealing, your steering wheel vibrates, or you see fluids underneath your vehicle, get to your mechanic right away. The sooner you make even minor repairs to your car, the cheaper your repair costs can be and the longer your car will operate.

4. Don't overheat

An overheating engine is one that won't last long, so make sure your car has plenty of coolant in it year-round. Different types of coolant are used for different seasons of the year so ask your mechanic what type of coolant you should be using in summer versus winter.

5. Drive safely

Not letting your engine warm up for a few minutes before driving down the road is hard on your car's transmission. Hard stops and starts can also wear on your tranny and engine. Drive safely to keep your vehicle in sound running condition and to avoid a potential accident.

6. Park in a garage

Parking your car in an enclosed area protects your vehicle against vandalism, theft, and sun damage. Store your car in a garage or carport when not in use to make it last longer.
